What a Life-Altering Decision Looks Like

My story in 7 inflection points, and how to catch your next one before it passes.

There are a handful of decisions that shape your entire life. Most people don’t realize they’re in the middle of one until years later. But when you zoom out, the inflection points start to show themselves.

This is a map of mine. I’m sharing it because it might help you reflect on yours. The ones you’ve already made, and the ones you might be standing on the edge of right now.

Let’s start at 18.

At 18, I chose a college in San Diego because I could see myself living there after graduation. That one decision defined my next decade. The network I built, the lifestyle I lived, and the career I established all trace back to it.

At 20, I studied abroad and moved across the world without knowing a single person. It forced me to get comfortable in the unknown. It’s also where I met Matt, a friend who left a big impression on me. He taught me three things I still carry with me today.

The first was Morning Hundreds. 100 pushups, 100 core, 100 air squats, and 100 of anything else. Simple and effective. I still do them.

The second was to give first. The law of reciprocity is real, and the people who give more than they take tend to win in the long run.

The third was to learn sales. After the trip I got a part-time job with the Padres, and when I told Matt about it, he said I should also find a part-time sales job. That advice stuck and pushed me toward my next big decision.

At 21, I joined a tech company while I was still in school. From a financial standpoint, it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I learned outbound sales, helped 30+ friends land jobs, built teams, and got mentored by our CRO while we grew from 30 to 300+ employees. By 25, I was a director at one of the fastest-growing startups in San Diego.

At 26, I decided to live alone. I’d spent years living with some of my best friends through college and after, and that chapter was everything you’d imagine. Surfing around work, big nights out, and building a rocketship together. But I needed space to think, to evolve, and to reset. That decision laid the foundation for everything that came next.

At 27, I started Seaweed Cowboy, which is still one of my favorite chapters. It was born out of a backyard conversation and mixed the sales skills I’d built with my obsession with creativity, story, and adventure. We made short films, told stories for brands, made lifelong memories, and even had a few $20-30k months. Most importantly, I proved to myself that I could build something outside the tech world.

At 28, I quit drinking and leaned into endurance. I haven’t talked about this much. Around 25, I started waking up after long nights hungover and disappointed, looking in the mirror and feeling like I was wasting my potential. Those feelings are a big part of why I moved out on my own. Still, it took almost two years of false starts and falling back into old patterns before I truly committed.

I needed something to explain why I wasn’t drinking anymore, so I signed up for a marathon. Then a Half Ironman. Then a 23-mile paddle across the Catalina Channel. Then a full Ironman. Each one built my self-trust and reminded me what I was capable of. Quitting drinking gave me clarity, but endurance gave me confidence. For the first time, I felt like I could see the future.

At 29, I moved to Portugal and went all in on myself. By that point, I knew what I needed to do. I wrote about rites of passage in Chapter 29, and this was mine. Leave comfort behind, enter the unknown, test myself, and come back transformed.

I made three commitments. To apply my endurance mindset to this chapter. To write, tell stories, and master short-form video. And to use that skill set as the foundation for every business I build moving forward.

I moved to Portugal with no job, no income, and no plan B. I left behind $15-25k a month in earning potential to bet on a vision and a healthy dose of delusional confidence.

Six months in, I’m closing in on 30K followers and helping founders grow their businesses through story and organic content. The first person I ran through my system added nearly 100K followers in less than a month and has received hundreds of inquiries for weddings and retreats on their property. That could mean hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue. None of it would have happened if I hadn’t taken the leap.

I’m sharing all of this because a handful of decisions really do shape your life. You can change everything with one bold choice, but you rarely see the impact overnight. Sometimes it takes weeks, months, or even years. As Steve Jobs put it, you can only connect the dots looking back. Knowing that makes you more aware of the moments that matter while you’re in them.

For me, every one of these decisions built on the last. I’ve spent the past decade building my mind, my confidence, and my belief system. Studying people a few steps ahead of me. Doing hard things. Rewiring the way I think.

And I’m still just getting started. If I told you the vision I have for the next ten years, you’d think I was insane. But delusional confidence paired with a willingness to do the work will take you further than you think.

Honestly, I can’t imagine doing anything else. I love the pursuit. I love building and taking ideas and making them real. I love telling stories that move people, and I love the impact it has. It’s a healthy obsession, and this is only the beginning.

So take a moment today and reflect on the decisions that have shaped your life so far. Then think about the decisions you could make today that will shape what your life looks like five or ten years from now. I’ve found that zooming out helps. Think in decades, but act in days.

Rooting for you.
